Hello and welcome back to Consistent Distant Love! I hope y'all are doing well! June is almost over, can you believe it? I sure can't. I am still trying to make the best of quarantine, and doing my part to social distance. I got a COVID test last week and I was negative which is good news! I have a lot of uncertainty about what my college situation is going to look like next year, so I am trying to sit tight and not worry. I as always love and miss you all, and hope you like this letter :)
Tweets of the Week
Twitter was alive and well this week, here are some highlights:
I am so disappointed in JK Rowling, so I like this take :)
Absolutely absurd how many NASCAR related articles I read this week.
Two weeks out of high school and this is already the vibe.
Sassy Celeb of the Week: Christina Aguilera
This weekend we watched Burlesque, an amazing 2012 film featuring Christina Aguilera and Cher. Ms. Aguilera's vocal's proved once again, that I have no choice but to stan! If you are looking for a fun campy musical, I definitely recommend streaming this on Netflix!
Quarantunes
I had been stuck in a rut with music recently so I made a brand new playlist trying to capture the mood I feel when I am in my bed all day. Click this link to give it a listen!
We went to a haunted seaside ex-speakeasy????
Caroline had a day of paid time off this week so we wanted to do a day trip so she could fully enjoy not working. After some brainstorming, we decided to travel down the coast to Half Moon Bay, an adorable surf town destination. Caroline planned a morning of walking and beaching, and it was my job to pick a place for lunch. I was determined to find a restaurant with these three criteria:
A view of the ocean
Outdoor seating (obviously due to the pandemic)
Vegan gluten-free options for me, and good seafood for Caroline.
I surfed the web for a while and finally stumbled upon Moss Beach Distillery. It is located about 15 minutes north of Half Moon Bay and touts a beautiful deck overlooking a private beach, complete with firepits and ample room for social distanced dining. This restaurant already seemed like a catch, but once we got there, we realized it had so much more to offer.
Accessing the eatery involved driving down a long private road (seemed like almost a mile). The reason why this place is so secluded is because it was a Speakeasy during prohibition! The private beach made this prime real estate for Canadian rum-runners to drop off the illegal beverages. At the time the restaurant was named Frank's Place and it was an extremely successful business, and unlike many other speakeasies, it was never once raided. Once the days of prohibition were over, Frank's continued to be opened but transitioned to the business of fine dining and wedding hosting, eventually changing its name to Moss Beach Distillery.
legend has it that one of the most loyal customers, The Lady in Blue, still haunts the place trying to relive the romance and excitement of the speakeasy era. She was killed on a tragic night at the private beach with her lover, and she still wanders looking for him, sometimes causing mischief. The NBC show Unsolved Mysteries even covered her in an episode! Learn more here!
Charming history and paranormal activity aside, this place was actually AMAZING! The view was immaculate and the ambiance was so pleasant. I had a quinoa kale salad and an Arnold Palmer and Caroline had clam chowder and a house cocktail. We also split some AMAZING garlic fries! I 10/10 recommend this place and am already dying to go back.
This isn't my pic, but look at that viewwwww
Caleb is Going on an Adventure!
My dear friend Caleb is spending the first half of his gap year hiking the Continental Divide Trail! He started this week up at the Montana-Canada border and will be heading down to the Mexico-New Mexico border. The trip should be finished in early December! I am so happy for him because he has been want to do something like this since we met three years ago. You can follow Caleb @calebjm_cdt on Instagram where he will be posting updates when he can! Go Caleb!!
Swifties Retreat
This weekend, Caroline her best friend Liza, Natalia, and I all went up to Tahoe for a girls' weekend. We decided early on that the trip would be designated as a "Swifties Retreat." We embarked on the ambitious journey of listening to all of her albums in order and each picking a top two from each one. We started in the car there listening to Taylor Swift, Fearless, and Speak Now. Red and 1989 were listened to between meals, lake trips, and games of Ticket to Ride. Reputation, Lover, and her singles were all saved for the way home.
The results of the weekend were logged in this journal:
Fellow Swifties, if you want to participate, please email your top two from each album and I will make a master ranking!
The News From Hanken Drive (What's Up With Grandpa)
Grandpa and I spent a lot of time together this week because I was helping him with secretarial work for a peer review on an engineering project for a Native American reservation in the Sierra (his first real work since he was in the hospital this fall!). I did not take a lot of pictures, but I do have this picture of him with the caramel corn that I bought him that he proceeded to eat all of for dinner that night.
Ooh Lala!
Lo and I originally built our friendship on an affinity for possums, so naturally I was ecstatic when she sent me the charcoal sketches.
Newsletter Behind the Scenes
real photos of me outlining the letter on my phone while at the beach! (hiding from the glare of the sun)
Memes? Memes.
Quarantine has given me lots of time to refine my skills as a meme connoisseur. In this form tell me your favorite meme/comedy account on Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, or wherever!
That's all for this week! My inbox is always open so of course give me any feedback you want! Miss you all! Stay safe!
xoxoxo
