NOLS Never Ends

Updated: Oct 19, 2021

Hello all!! I hope you all had a good week. I have been in such a great mood this week because Mira (one of my best friends from NOLS) is in town and I have gotten to spend so much time with her! Dane, her, and I have been spending every moment we can together and though it of course is not the same, it does fill a little bit of the NOLS shaped hole in my heart. Generally just feeling very content and trying my best to appreciate all the free time I have not being in school.

Enjoying my own Company

A big part of adjusting to being home from my trip has been relearning to be okay with being by myself. When I was in the field, it could be rare to ever have a moment alone because we were always in such close quarters and constantly depending on each other for everything. It has definitely been a shock to my system to suddenly live the exact opposite of that. I have made a conscious effort to do activities by myself that are special and celebrate solitude. This week that was getting my favorite takeout (Cafe Del Soul), getting a new book, and heading out to Rodeo Beach.

It was so fun to just enjoy the breeze and hike up the hill to enjoy the view. I feel like there is a social expectation that you have to go do things with other people and that it is weird to be seen in public alone. But it is actually so fun to just do things by yourself, at least in my case, I am a lot more observant and kind of see things through different eyes.

I also read a book in one sitting which was very very unusual for me, but I have been trying to also work on my attention span so I am proud. I read Convenience Store Women which I really recommend.

NOLS Never Ends

Having Mira out here (all the way from Brooklyn) has been such a joy. It is always fun to have someone visit you because at least for me it makes me look at my home through a new lens. We have been having a slumber party every night at Dane's Stinson house which has honestly felt like being at sleep away camp, which is good practice for Dane because he will be working at a camp all summer. We have been hiking, swimming, and showing Mira all of the sights the Bay has to offer. Mira's take "It's a lot greener than I thought it would be."

News From Hanken Drive

Not much to report from Grandpa but his 92nd birthday is only a month away!

Claire Goes to Costco

Though I have been to Costco many times, this was my first time going in many years and my first time going alone. Here is a little poem about Costco:

The biggest person feels small in Costco

It is where a found person who needs to be lost goes

It is a place where anyone can have fun

As long as they are looking for pretzels by the ton

I have to say I am grateful I went

But it will be a while until I am there again

Ooh La La

We have been doing a lot of art this week, here is one of her pieces!

Evening Plunge

Staying with the Bloom's has introduced me to the little tradition of an evening plunge which was absolutely lovely.

That's all for this week!! I absolutely love you all, and I would hear from you because I always am dying to keep in touch.

xoxoxo

Claire

P.S.
