Hello and welcome back to Consistent Distant Love! I am heading into my last week of "Summer" before I start my online classes which is pretty bizarre to think about. Normally, I am sad for summer to be over, and this year I would have thought I would be excited to start college, but overall I am actually feeling pretty ambivalent about all of it. I am sure some of you other soon to be college freshmen feel the same. I am trying to soak up what I can enjoy of the last of my free time, mostly with walks to the cafe and rewatching High School Musical the Musical the Series with Will. I hope you all are doing well and staying cool! On to the letter :)

I hope this makes you smile as much as it made me smile :)))

The News From Hanken Drive
Grandpa's tree is bearing many apples at this time which is good because we love apple pie, apple sauce, apple butter, and pretty much all apple products! My dad has been helping pick and cut the apples, and I have done most of the cooking!
I also came over to discuss with him the upcoming cenntenial of the 19th ammendment which he read about in The New Yorker.
Activism From Home!
I have not been able to go out to protest recently because of my concerns about being in large groups (I have to be very careful if I want to see Grandpa). So for the past few months, I have been finding ways to help engage from home. This week Caroline and I wrote thirty postcards to potential voters in black communities in Florida to remind them to vote and fill out the census! We did this through the organizations Reclaim Our Vote and Black Voters Matter. If you want to do this too you can check out their websites or if you live in the Bay Area, I can connect you with my friends who helped me get involved.
Another way I was able to do my part for the community while also avoiding large groups was by contributing to the Spahr Center clothing drive that they had this weekend. They collected clothes to distribute to trans youth in the community who need gender-affirming clothes.
A Fairfax Surprise!
After my run on Wednesday, I went the Bolinas Park in Fairfax to lie down for a bit, eat my burrito, and crochet. As I was resting there, the Fairfax Farmer's market sprung up around me, which I had not expected! I love a good farmer's market, so I was delighted to check it out. I had already made plans to go to the market at the Civic Center with Lily the next day, so I was not in the market for any food, but I still checked out the booths. One that particularly caught my eye was a stand selling eclectic mobiles, prints, and jewelry. I chatted with the who was selling, and she was the one who made it all! She was so kind, and she told me it was her first time selling at a market (usually her sales are online). I bought a print from her and I really love it! It was such a lucky surprise to find her!
This is what I bought!
It is now on my wall!
Throwback...
Back in my days as a flutist, I went to the most wonderful music camp called Camp Cazadero! Most of my Summers there were spent playing music, doing camp activities, and sleeping under the stars. Caz was lovely and it *almost* never rained, in fact there are only two times I remember it raining. One of those times was during a very important sectional rehearsal we were having before our concert, so we had to improvise a way to protect our instruments. Our teachers ended up cramming us all into a utility shed to finish rehearsal. We began to refer to ourselves as "flutes in the shed" or "fish" for short, and though we were wet and cold, I still see it as a fond memory of music camp. The other day, Caz posted a picture from that day, can you find me in it?
~Experimental~ Cooking
It is no secret that I am often experimenting in the kitchen, but this week I made some particularly out of the ordinary recipes!
Carrot Lox
Believe it or not, this funk recipe was actually Caroline's idea. This was somewhat complicated to make, but it was really yummy so I think it paid off! I have never had real lox before so I am not quite sure if it was that accurate, but Caroline and Mint said it was. I paired it with a gf bagel and vegan cream cheese! Here is the recipe
Zucchini Fritters
These fritters aren't quite as crazy as the lox, but they were still pretty ambitious! I will definitely make them again. Here is the recipe
Sweet Potato Pancakes
I am not quite sure what inspired me to make these, but they were pretty darn good. Caroline was skeptical, but ended up really enjoying them! I used this recipe, but used more sweet potato than it called for!
Drive-in Movie!
This weekend we went to see a drive-in of one of Mint's favorite movies, Grease! It was super fun, especially because this movie has a drive-in movie scene, which is kind of metta. If you live in Marin, I recommend going to one of the Lark drive-ins!
Which is your favorite song on Folklore by Taylor Swift?
Let me know in this form and I will send out a pie chart next week of the results!
Podcast :)
Last week's episode with the lovely Eli Rallo is available here, and there will be a new episode with Ashley Wicka in your feed tomorrow!
That’s all for this week, a little bit shorter than usual (no celeb shout out or ooh lala). Please stay in touch, I love you all!
xoxoxo
