Consistent Distant Love (Sunday, July 5th)

Hello and welcome back to Consistent Distant Love! It has been a crazy world this week, so please excuse me for sticking to the positive in this letter. I hope everyone is doing well! I myself am pretty stressed out because it is becoming more and more clear that I probably will not be going to LA in the Fall. But all I can do for right now is wait and see how situation develops. On to the letter!

Tweets of the week

Twitter was pretty fun this week, here are some highlights:

I laughed at this more than I should have.

I have been in Urinetown twice, and I have to say this resonates.

Even though these meals are not vegan, they really warm my heart.

Sassy Celeb of the week: Ted Allen

Minty and I love to watch Chopped and I of course can never get enough of Ted Allen's commentary and culinary insight, no wonder he has an Emmy! Minty loves Chopped Sweets, but I don't like that as much because there is no Ted!

Flower identifying!

Up at our cabin, my grandpa gave me this book to use to hunt for flowers! This book was published in 1970 and has dozens of flower illustrations and descriptions that are organized by color. Grandpa even knew the women who did the drawings in the book! I took a walk through the meadow to see which ones I could find. Here are some of the best pictures I took:

Susan’s Store Room

Since childhood I have walked by this shop with wonder, the weekly window displays are enchanting, and the old school music the pump onto the sidewalk is oh so inviting. Minty used to take me inside for little gifts and trinkets, and we honestly could spend hours admiring the Stieff teddy bears and vintage tea sets. This week I had some free time to revisit Susan’s for the first time in a year or two. I may or may not have paid the shop three visits in the past week, and it honestly was the most serotonin I have gotten in a while. Susan’s spans three storefronts and every corner is filled with expertly curated displays of vintage toys, darling books, and stationery supplies. As you walk through the rooms of the stores you are also going on a tour of the world, with different shelves dedicated to different countries, continents, and corners of the world. The lovely ladies who work in this store are so kinds and have so much knowledge of all of the wares they sell. During my trips this week I made several purchases including some cards for loved ones (Susan also runs a stationery company out of the shop), sealing wax and a wax seal, vintage Hawaiian beads, a variety of vintage stickers, and lots of postcards from the early 1900s (I will be writing about these in a later letter, so stay tuned). I can not encourage you enough to give this shop a visit!

This is an image of the front room of the store, the longer you look, the more lovely things you find.

A close up of the royal wedding section!

Some of the postcards that I could look at for hours!

If you can't go in person, I urge you to check out her blog, here.

The News from Hanken Drive (What’s up with Grandpa!)

This weekend we brought Grandpa up for another trip to the mountains! He packed up his duffle bag and we picked him up at 8:00 am on Friday. His caretaker told me that he was telling her all week about how excited he was to walk through the meadow, read in the sun, and watch the sunset over the sierra skyline. I would say he rather enjoyed himself and he of course loves any excuse to getaway! One of the funniest moments this weekend is when I spotted him reading a People Magazine because we were not able to get him a newspaper! We spent Saturday evening listening to an opera titled “Falstaff.” He told me his favorite thing he did was look at wildflowers in bloom.

Quarantunes

Meteor Shower by Cavetown- this song for me is the definition of "some type of way"

Jackie and Wilson by Hozier- I love the sentiment of this song and don't be surprised if I have kids that I name Jackie and Wilson

Writer in the Dark by Lorde- I constantly cycle through which Lorde song is my fav, and this one currently takes the cake!

Strawberry Blonde by Mitski- I live laugh love this song, even as it slowly becomes a Tik Tok song

i feel like chet by mxmtoon- Annie and I fell in love with this song a while ago, but I rediscovered it recently and still love it just as much!

Abby is living out her dreams!

For years Abby has told me about her desire to work in a plant nursery, and this Summer she has finally got her gig! She is currently employed at the Sloat Garden center. She starts the day watering because every plant at the center is hand watered. The rest of the day she spends cleaning and working at the cash register. This week I got to visit her on the job, and she showed me around the plants! I bought a few house plants which was exciting! Her favorite part of the job is her kind and helpful coworkers!

Our Favorite Memes!

Last week I asked you all to refer me to your favorite meme accounts, so here is a list!

Instagram

Tik Tok

Swifties Revisited!

Last week I wrote about the swiftie rankings we made on our Tahoe trip! After getting a few emails from you guys I was able to determine the "top" song on each album: Taylor Swift- Our Song

Fearless- Fearless

Speak Now- Enchanted/Sparks Fly Tie

Red- All Too Well

1989- New Romantics

Reputation- Gorgeous

Lover- Paper Rings/Cruel Summer Tie

Singles- Crazier

Ooh La La!

Every Summer Kylie does a musical theatre camp for local kids, and luckily she was able to put on a socially distanced version this year! When the campers weren't singing and dancing, they did lots of fun crafts, including this cute jewelry:

Some sketches from Willow!! More mushroom men :)))

Oh to be the miniature mouse in the Throckmorton window display

The Throckmorton Theatre, a place I have grown to love throughout high school, is not currently doing so well due to the fact that they have had to cancel all of their live performances. If you are able to support them, you can donate here. In true Throckmorton fashion, they have set up the windows of theatre with ornate displays, that I spent a fair amount of time admiring. Nestled in one corner was a scale model of the interior of the theatre, and perched on one of the balconies was this little stuffed mouse. The way the mouse is posed is so thoughtful and invokes a little feeling of wonder. I like to think that the mouse enjoys watching all of the downtown Mill Valley traffic go by, but longs for a day when the theatre can be open again.

Podcast Alert!

I recorded a new podcast episode with this groovy vegan girl named Pippin Jardine! Check out the episode here!

What Non-book media are you enjoying reading?

Tell me what you have been enjoying reading other than books (my reading list is far too long right now). A specific newspaper? Back of a cereal box? Takeout menu? Tabloid magazine? Let me know in this form!

That is all for this week! I miss you all so terribly and I encourage you to keep in touch. Send me any art, recommendations, or whatever is on your mind!

xoxoxo
